About Mark Rolfe Music

After a almost ten years service to live music, in 2002 at the age of 27 I became inspired by teaching and worked towards being registered instrumental tutor with the RGT and have not looked back since. I usually see around 80 students a week alongside many ensembles and groups. I work four days a week in the Music Department at Nottingham Girls High School and also work part time at The Elms (the brilliant junior school to Trent College), I mostly teach towards the London College Of Music (Electric and Acoustic) and Trinity/Guildhall (Classical and Bass) and ABRSM syllabi where I have maintained 100% pass rate since entering my first student in 2003. I am also a tutor ABRSM theory which I truly believe in. Alongside instrumental tuition at school I also run a number of chamber ensembles and bands. I have also been involved in everything from rudimental music theory, classroom music, concert organization, film scoring and arranging during my 10 years at NGHS. I studied for a teaching diploma with the London College of Music through the Thames Valley University which I passed at upper level and was awared a DipLCM (TD). In my late 20's I also decided to return to part-time education with the OU to further concolidate my music studies and graduated with Bachelors Diploma in Music (DipMUS) where I picked up a love of Music History and style. I am hoping to progress further into research and study in my main passion which is Music History and Musicology in the future.

I believe your instrument is a catalyst or a vehicle to understand appreciate the wonder of music. Some skills you can learn on the various types of guitar can be applied to all instruments, composition, academic music studies, playing in a band, you name it! I'm not really about making budding rock star, so if it is that you are after I may not be right for the job. However if you want to learn to be a great musician with a virtuous potential that understands the principles of music, the wonder of music and has a creative and artistic flare to create and explore....I can help! Amongst my other areas of work which you can read about on this site, I run a music Summer School business with a bsuiness partner which has just completed a very successful first year in 2008. Alongside currating, arranging the music and timetabling the course, and being responsible for members of staff I run the Chamber Orchestra, which is a great contrast to guitar tuition. I also offer a consultancy service for private music tutors and teaching practices. My work often includes helping teaching practices to improve their business and revenue by anaylising their strengths and weakneses, teaching pyscholog, promotion, plan lessons and repertoire and to think critically. I tutor a small amount of children and adults out of school on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, I occasionally have spaces come free so please feel free to get in touch!.

The guitar is the instrument I play the most and most certainly the instrument I understand the most. I am fully conversant in Classical, Acoustic, Elecrtic and Bass Guitar. I am comfortable with a large range of repertoire and styles from early music, Baroque, Folk, Rock, Pop.  The only thing I would really struggle with in terms of interest and technique is "trash and metal" l, I have never explored these styles. I also do not teach Rockschool grades. Alongside guitar I also teach most other things with strings and frets! such as The Banjo, The Ukulele and The Mandolin. I am also a keen Clarinetist and hope to develop a teaching practice in this in the next few years. I also play Piano, Drums and Violin (to an extent!) purely for my own enjoyment, but guitars and music theory remain my specialty.

Emily and Mal

In the summer of 2009, due to the small amount of students I am able to home tutor I decided to enlist the services of two of my senior students, both of whom are wonderful musicians, theorists and most importantantly communicators and excellent tutors.I entered into partner ship with Emily Cash DipLCM, a Grade 8 Guitar student of mine with many years of experience in running music workshops and music education, Emily is proffesionally proficient in Acoustic style guitar and extremely knowagable of the LCM Acoustic Guitar Syllabus. My other teaching partner is Mal Fairless, a highly capable and guitarist and thoerist who specializes is Electric lead guitar playing amongst other styles.
